Code layout
Every touch in a match is stored as one code in the DataVolley layout, the same in Courtside, DataVolley 4 and VolleyStation Pro. You rarely type a full code: the command line fills it in from what you type. This page explains the full code, so you can read the code log and add details when you want them.
A full code
*08AT#X5~46AT2
| Position | In the example | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | * | Team: * home, a away |
| 2–3 | 08 | Shirt number, two digits. $$ is an unknown player. |
| 4 | A | Skill. See Skills, types and evaluations. |
| 5 | T | Type: how fast or high the ball was played |
| 6 | # | Evaluation: the rating |
| 7–8 | X5 | Attack combination, or the setter call on a set. See Combinations and setter calls. |
| 9 | ~ | Target: who a set went to |
| 10 | 4 | Start zone. See Zones and subzones. |
| 11 | 6 | End zone |
| 12 | A | End subzone |
| 13 | T | Subtype, here a tip |
| 14 | 2 | Number of players, here two blockers |
| 15 | Special, such as O for a ball out | |
| 16 on | Custom text |
The example reads: home #8, attack, tense, perfect, combination X5, from zone 4 to zone 6, subzone A, a tip against two blockers.
~ means "nothing in this position". Everything after the evaluation is optional and can be left off at the end: *08AH# is a complete code, and so is *08AH#~~~48.
Positions 13 to 15 are the extended part. Which letters each skill takes there: Typing styles.
Typing it shorter
You can type the same attack in several ways. All of these give *08AT#X5~46AT2 when the season's combination table has X5 (start zone 4, type T):
| You type | Style |
|---|---|
*08AT#X5~46AT2 | the full code |
8AT#X5~46AT2 | DataVolley's columns, home without * |
8X56A#T2 | VolleyStation's order: combination for the skill, zones before the evaluation, extended part after it |
See Typing styles.
Codes that aren't touches
| Code | What it is | Type it as |
|---|---|---|
*p25:23, ap23:25 | Point, with the score after it (home:away) | p25:23, or a Point button |
*T, aT | Timeout | T, aT |
*c06:07 | Substitution: #6 off, #7 on | c6.7 |
*z3 | The setter is in zone 3 | z3 |
*P5 | The setter is #5 | P5 |
**1set | End of set 1 | written by Courtside, see Ending a set |
a$$&H= | A point or error with no player touch (a "green code") | added by Courtside, see The green code; or type a$$&= |
A lineup's P and z codes end in >LUp. Courtside writes them when you enter a starting lineup.
A code that starts with > is a comment, for example a referee's decision. Imported files keep theirs.
