Typing styles

Courtside reads codes typed the VolleyStation way and the DataVolley way, so you can keep the habits you have. You can mix them in one match, even on one line.

  • VolleyStation style: details go where you think of them. Zones before the evaluation, the extended part after it, no ~. A combination or setter call can stand in for the skill letter.
  • DataVolley style: details go in their fixed columns after the evaluation, with ~ for each gap.

The skill can be left out wherever Courtside would pick it anyway: 8#T2 after your own pass is an attack, a tip against two blockers.

VolleyStation order, step by step

After the shirt number:

  1. Skill, or a combination or setter call in its place (X5, K1). Optional where Courtside predicts it.
  2. Type, optional.
  3. Call or combination, if you didn't put it in place of the skill. On a set, the call can be followed by the target (F B C P S).
  4. Zones: one or two digits, then a subzone letter A–D. With two zones, they're start and end. With one: on an attack it's the start zone; on a set, or after a combination, it's the end zone.
  5. Evaluation.
  6. Extended part: subtype, number of players, special, in that order (see below).

DataVolley columns

After the evaluation, each position has its place: combination (2), target, start zone, end zone, subzone, subtype, players, special, custom text. Use ~ for a position you skip. See Code layout.

Courtside reads what follows the evaluation by column when it has a ~ in it, or starts with a combination or call from the table. So 8A#P2 is combination P2 (if your table has it), not a soft attack against two blockers. To code the soft attack in that case, type it by column: 8A#~~~~~~P2.

You can't mix both in one code: zones before the evaluation and columns after it give "Zones go before the evaluation and … after it in its columns: type one or the other."

The extended part

The extended part is positions 13 to 15: subtype, number of players and special. Courtside accepts these letters for each skill:

SkillSubtypePlayersSpecial
AttackH hard, P soft, T tip0–3 blockers, 4 hole blockS O F X N C I Z A
BlockA T0–4S O F X N I P Z T
ReceptionL R W O M1–9U X P Z E
DigS C B EU X P Z E F O
Set1 one hand, 2 two hands, 3 bump, 4 other, 5 underhandU I Z
ServeO L R N Z
Free ballU X P Z E

What each letter means, with examples, is on Advanced codes. A reception also takes Z for overhand, as VolleyStation types it (written O), except on an error, where Z is a referee call. In VolleyStation order you type only what applies, left to right: 8#T2 (tip, two blockers), 8=O (out).

MessageMeaning
"Put the skill letter (S R E A B D F) before the zones and the rest."With zones or columns, type the skill (or a combination or call).
"4567: at most two zones, start and end."Too many digits before the evaluation.
"X: a call or combination has two characters."A call or combination is cut short.
"…: can't read … there."Something after the zones that isn't a subzone.
