Installing Courtside

Courtside installs from one file, with video playback included. You don't need a terminal, and there's nothing else to install.

There are two parts:

  • the desktop app, where you code and watch matches (this page), and
  • the command-line tool courtside, which checks, converts and summarises .dvw files without opening the app. You don't need it to code. See The command-line tool below.

The Courtside team sends you the installer for your computer.

info

These first builds aren't signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so your computer asks you to confirm the first time you open Courtside. The steps are below. Signed builds and automatic updates come later.

macOS

You need: a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later), running macOS 15 Sequoia or later.

Install

  1. Open the file you were sent, Courtside_<version>_arm64.dmg. A window opens with Courtside and your Applications folder.
  2. Drag Courtside onto Applications.
  3. Close the window, and eject the Courtside disk in Finder's sidebar.

Open it the first time

macOS stops apps it can't check with Apple. You let Courtside through once, and from then on it opens like any other app.

  1. In Applications, double-click Courtside. A message says Apple could not verify that Courtside is free of malware. Click Done.

  2. Open System Settings (Apple menu → System Settings) and click Privacy & Security in the sidebar.

  3. Scroll down to Security. Next to the message about Courtside, click Open Anyway.

  4. Confirm with Open, then your password or Touch ID.

Courtside opens. You only do this once.

The first time it opens, Courtside asks whether to send crash reports. See Crash reports.

Right-clicking the app and choosing Open no longer skips these steps on macOS 15 and later. Apple explains the steps in Safely open apps on your Mac.

Windows

You need: a 64-bit Windows PC.

Install

  1. Run the file you were sent, Courtside_<version>_x64-setup.exe.

  2. Windows shows "Windows protected your PC". Click More info.

  3. Click Run anyway.

  4. Follow the installer.

Courtside installs for your Windows account only, so you don't need an administrator. If the PC doesn't have Microsoft's WebView2 runtime, the installer downloads it; Windows 11 already has it.

Windows warns about new apps it hasn't seen much of. Microsoft explains why in SmartScreen reputation.

Linux

There's no Linux installer yet.

Licences

The installer also carries video libraries under their own licences. See Licences for where their notices are and how to get their source.

The command-line tool

Install the courtside command if you want to check or convert .dvw files from a terminal. It's separate from the app.
