Teams and players
A match needs two teams, and each team needs a roster. You set teams up once on the Teams tab of the main menu, and every match you create copies their rosters.
There are three ways to get teams into a season:
- type them in (this page),
- import a DataVolley
.sqor VolleyStation.vstteam file (see Team files), - import a
.dvwmatch file, which brings both its teams (see Importing a .dvw).
Add a team
- On the main menu, open the Teams tab.
- Click New team.
- Fill in the team's details:
- Name, for example
Harbour City VC. - Code, a short code for the team. Leave it empty and Courtside makes one from the name: the initials of up to three words (
Harbour City VCbecomesHCV), or the first three letters of a one-word name. - Short code, up to five characters for team files. Leave it empty to use the start of the code.
- Name, for example
- Fill in Staff, Home venue and Kit if you have them. They're all optional: see Team details.
- Pick a Screen colour (see Team colours below), or leave it on Default.
- Add the players in the roster (see the next section).
- Click Save team.
Nothing is saved until you click Save team. Cancel throws the changes away.
Add players
The roster works like a spreadsheet: one row per player.
- Click Add player. A row appears with the next free shirt number.
- Type the Last name and First name.
- Pick a Role: Setter, Outside, Opposite, Middle or Libero.
- Tick the boxes that apply: L (libero), C (captain), Fgn (foreign player).
- Fill in Born, cm (height), kg (weight) and Reach (attack reach) if you want them.
Press Enter in the last row to add the next player without reaching for the mouse. Click × at the end of a row to take a player off the roster.
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
| No | Shirt number, 0 to 99. Each number once per roster. |
| Last name, First name | A last name is required. |
| Code | The player's code. Leave it empty and Courtside makes one from the names. |
| Role | Setter, Outside, Opposite, Middle or Libero. Courtside uses the setter role to find the setter when you enter a lineup. |
| L | Libero. Picking the Libero role ticks this for you. |
| C | Captain. |
| Fgn | Foreign player. |
| Born | Date of birth. |
| cm | Height in centimetres. |
| kg | Weight in kilograms. |
| Reach | Attack reach in centimetres. |
Player codes
Every player in the season has a code. If you leave Code empty, Courtside makes one from the first three letters of the last name and of the first name: Jo Smithson becomes SMI-JO, and Maria Castellano becomes CAS-MAR. The empty box shows the code it will get. If a code is already taken in the season, Courtside adds -2, -3 and so on.
You can type your own code instead. Two players on the same roster can't share one.
What stops a save
The line under the roster tells you what to fix before you can save:
- "Shirt numbers go from 0 to 99."
- "#7 is already on the roster."
- "Enter a last name."
- "Code SMI-JO is already on the roster."
The row with the problem is marked.
Team colours
Each team can have a screen colour. In a match, everything that belongs to the team (its name, its half of the court, its codes in the log) is drawn in that colour, so you can tell the two teams apart at a glance.
- Open the team (Edit on the Teams tab).
- Under Screen colour, pick one: Blue, Navy, Green, Orange, Red-orange, Brown or Charcoal. Default uses Courtside's own home and away colours.
- Click Save team.
Every colour has a light and a dark tone, so it reads well in both themes. Colours that could be mistaken for an error, a warning, a selection or the setter mark aren't offered.
If both teams in a match picked the same colour, the visiting team shows its default colour for that match.
The screen colour is only for Courtside's screens. The colour of the team's shirts is set under Kit (see Team details).
Edit, merge, export or delete a team
The Teams tab lists every team with its code, head coach, number of players and number of matches. Each row has:
- Edit: open the team editor.
- Merge: fold this team into another one (see below).
- Export: write a
.sqor.vstteam file (see Team files). - Delete: remove the team. Click it twice: the button asks Really delete? first. A team that has matches can't be deleted, only merged.
Editing a team never changes the players in a match you've already created. Each match keeps its own copy of the rosters (see Creating a match). A new name, staff or shirt colour does reach the exports of matches you coded here (see Changes and your matches).
Merge two teams
You'll end up with two records of one team when, say, you import a .dvw that spells the team's name differently. To merge them:
- On the Teams tab, click Merge on the team you want to get rid of.
- Under Into, pick the team to keep.
- For each player, pick who they are in the other team, or leave joins as a new player. Courtside guesses the pairs from codes, names and shirt numbers. Check its guesses.
- Click Merge teams.
The merged team's matches move to the team you kept. If a player who joins as a new player has a shirt number that's already taken in the other team, the merge stops and says "#8 is taken in the other team: pair the two players or renumber one".
The Players tab
The Players tab lists every player in the season with their number, team, code, role and number of matches. Type in Search to find a name or code, or pick a Team.
To merge two records of the same person:
- Tick the two players.
- Click Keep with the record you want to keep.
The other record's matches move to the one you keep.
